Is Invisalign Worth It?

You may not know what to expect when you or your child needs to start orthodontic treatment because there are a lot of variables to consider in the weeks and months ahead. Maybe you’re dreading a mouthful of metal braces because that’s what you think of when you think of orthodontic treatment. While it’s true that traditional braces have transformed in some pretty impressive ways in recent years, lots of teens and adults are still on the fence about starting treatment with braces.

Thankfully, there are many alternatives to metal braces. Some of the most common options are clear braces with ceramic brackets and clear Invisalign aligners. At Orthodontics of South Miami, we’ll create your unique smile by using a personalized treatment plan to get the best results.  We know that what works for one patient may not work for another, so we’ll take several different factors into account when choosing the best treatment for you. This includes:

  • Your diagnosis
  • How much work needs to be done
  • Your lifestyle
  • Your goals
  • Your personal preference
  • Your budget

Of the available braces alternative, Invisalign is the most popular option. Invisalign is usually a similar price to traditional metal braces, though they can sometimes be slightly more expensive. This might leave you wondering if Invisalign treatment is worth it. To learn more about why we believe Invisalign aligners are an excellent investment in your smile, keep reading below!

Invisalign by Dr. Ross: a subtle way to straighten your smile

A big selling point for Invisalign is the fact that the aligners are barely noticeable because they’re made of clear plastic that most people won’t notice. If you’re anxious about treatment making you stand out for the wrong reason, Invisalign might be a great option for you. Since clear aligners can be removed for short periods of time, they’re also perfect for any special event that you want your natural smile to shine through, such as prom, weddings, or senior pictures.

Invisalign comes with extra flexibility

Our Invisalign patients are able to enjoy more freedom than traditional treatment methods can offer! For instance, food restrictions are a common concern for orthodontic patients. And for good reason. Sticky and crunchy foods can destroy brackets and wires, so patients in braces must avoid them throughout the treatment process. This usually keeps you from eating many of your favorite foods. However, with Invisalign, you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want to! Simply remove the aligner before eating, then put it back in when you’re done.

Invisalign by Dr. Ross helps you maintain good oral hygiene

It can be a challenge to maintain a good oral hygiene routine with traditional braces because you have to essentially relearn how to brush and floss. Additionally, brushing and flossing around the brackets and bands can take time. They can also make it harder to get rid of any lingering food particles or plaque. To brush your teeth with Invisalign, just take your aligners off and clean your teeth normally. Caring for the aligners themselves couldn’t be easier, either. There are special kits designed to clean them, or they can be gently brushed using toothpaste and a soft toothbrush.

Invisalign can straighten your teeth in less time than braces

Every case is different and everyone will respond to treatment in their own way, so, unfortunately, there’s never a “one size fits all” answer as to how long you’ll need orthodontic treatment.

How well you comply with your treatment plan is an important factor in determining how long your treatment will actually take. For the aligners to work, you’ll need to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day during the whole treatment process. You’ll also be responsible for switching your aligners out for the next in the series every 1-2 weeks. This allows them to keep up with the movements your teeth are making.

If you follow all of the instructions, the average treatment time with Invisalign can be anywhere from about 6 to 18 months, which is actually slightly faster than the average treatment time with braces.

Invisalign works well for a wide range of orthodontic issues

In the early days of Invisalign, the aligners were mostly used to treat simple issues like minor spacing problems and mild crowding. As orthodontists realized the potential of the system and the system began to grow in popularity, the design improved dramatically.  Invisalign can now be used to treat the following conditions successfully:

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crowding
  • Deep overbite
  • Open bite
  • Crossbite
  • Excessive overjet

The Invisalign system can be just as effective as traditional braces when used by an experienced orthodontist like Dr. Ross or Dr. Rothenberg.

Invisalign offers special features for teen patients

When it comes to the treatment benefits and underlying technology, Invisalign and Invisalign Teen are the same. However, Invisalign Teen was developed with features that meet the unique needs of teenage patients, including:

Compliance indicators

If you remember, following treatment instructions is a critical component of Invisalign success. The aligners must be worn as directed by Dr. Ross or Dr. Rothenberg for them to work properly. You also probably know that teens aren’t always the best at following instructions. That’s why Invisalign added compliance indicators to make it easier. The compliance indicators incorporated into the Invisalign Teen aligners fade from blue to clear, providing parents and orthodontists with a visual approximation of wear. This lets them know if the patient is holding up their end of the treatment bargain!

Eruption tabs

This feature allows for the growth of a teen’s second molars. This helps keep space open for unerupted teeth and making it possible to treat a wider range of conditions with Invisalign.

Replacement aligners

Teens tend to lose things (as we all do), or they may accidentally break an aligner.

Although teens should always treat their aligners with care, there’s no need to worry if this happens! Invisalign Teen will provide up to six replacement aligners at no charge, just in case.

Trust your smile to the Invisalign experts at Orthodontics of South Miami

The Invisalign system comes with many benefits. That doesn’t mean it’s the best option for everyone. In general, the aligners tend to work best for adult and teen patients with mild to moderate orthodontic issues. Cases that are particularly complex or severe may need more precise tooth control than a removable aligner can achieve.

When you schedule your FREE consultation with Dr. Ross or Dr. Rothenberg, they’ll determine if treatment with Invisalign aligners is a good fit for your smile. If they decide that a different treatment option will produce a better result, we’ll talk you through everything we offer. You can trust us to only recommend the treatment we believe to be best for your unique smile!

During this first visit with us, we’ll also explain the investment you’re about to make in your new smile. You’ll learn more about our payment options and insurance coverage.
