How To Maintain Your Braces During Illness

Life happens — sometimes, we get sick, and it can throw off our regular routine. Whether it’s a cold, flu, or another illness, it’s understandable that taking care of your braces might feel like a challenge. But commitment to your orthodontic treatment is key, even when feeling under the weather. Dr. Ross and Dr. Rothenberg of Orthodontics of South Miami are here to share some helpful tips for maintaining your braces during illness so you can continue on your path to a perfect smile.

Reschedule Appointments and Visits

While it’s tempting to push through and make it to your appointment, coming to Orthodontics of South Miami when you’re sick is not a good idea. Your health is always our top priority. Call our South Miami, Pinecrest, or Kendall office to reschedule your in-person visit for when you’re feeling better. You can also take advantage of our virtual consultations if you need advice on handling discomfort or a broken bracket or wire while you’re at home.

If a wire or bracket has been damaged, Dr. Ross and Dr. Rothenberg suggest trimming the wire or keeping the loose bracket in a safe place to avoid further irritation. Don’t worry; we’ll repair any damage once you’re back to full health.

Stay On Top of Oral Hygiene and Braces Care

We get it — when you’re sick, all you want to do is stay in bed. However, neglecting your oral hygiene during this time can lead to problems like cavities and plaque buildup, which can set back the treatment of your braces. Taking a few minutes to brush and floss will keep your smile on track.

Here’s a refresher on how to brush properly with braces:

  • Rinse your mouth with water first.
  • Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, clean above and below the brackets in a circular motion.
  • Brush the inner surfaces of your teeth, making sure to reach both the upper and lower teeth thoroughly.
  • Gently clean the chewing surfaces of your teeth in a back-and-forth motion.
  • Don’t forget to clean your tongue, and finish by rinsing your mouth.

Using an interdental brush is also a great way to remove any trapped food between your braces and teeth. Stick to brushing twice a day, even when you’re not feeling your best. Your future smile will thank you!

Eat the Right Foods

Illness often reduces your appetite, but it’s still important to fuel your body with nutrient-rich, braces-friendly foods to aid in your recovery and maintain your orthodontic progress. Opt for soft, warm meals like chicken noodle soup, vegetable broth, or oatmeal to soothe your throat and nourish your body. You can also snack on soft fruits like bananas.

As always, avoid sugary foods and drinks. Sugar can lead to tooth decay and plaque buildup, both of which can complicate the care of your brace.

Feeling Nauseous?

Unfortunately, vomiting is sometimes a side effect of being sick. If you do throw up, it’s tempting to brush your teeth right away to get rid of the sour taste, but it’s important to wait. Dr. Ross and Dr. Rothenberg recommend waiting at least 30 minutes before brushing to avoid spreading the stomach acid around your teeth, which can erode enamel. In the meantime, rinse your mouth with water or an antiseptic mouthwash to neutralize the acid and freshen your breath.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to support your recovery when you’re sick. Drinking water helps flush out toxins from your body and keeps your mouth hydrated, which helps prevent dry mouth and tooth decay. Keep a water bottle handy so you can sip throughout the day without getting out of bed.

Try Saltwater Gargles

Saltwater gargles are a tried-and-true remedy for sore throats and are also great for oral health. Gargling with salt water can help reduce plaque and inflammation, especially if your braces are irritating your gums. It’s also a good solution for rinsing out your mouth if you have cuts or sores caused by your braces.
